WRI Global Power Plant Database
Global plant-level generation capacity database, version 1.3.0, no longer maintained.
Reference only The catalog records where this dataset is and who publishes it, and does not describe its contents.

A global inventory of power plants with capacity, fuel, location and, where available, generation. Version 1.3.0 was released in 2021 and the database is no longer maintained. It is superseded by the Global Energy Monitor Global Integrated Power Tracker, which covers the same ground at unit rather than plant level and is actively updated. The record is kept because it is still widely cited and because the supersession link is what lets a user discover that the paper they are reading used a stale source.

The exclusions are the half you cannot get anywhere else. A dataset that is wrong for your question is worth knowing about before you build on it.

No field-level metadata yet.
This is a reference-only pointer: the catalog records where the dataset is and who publishes it, and does not describe its contents.
Three independent facets
Graded separately and never combined. A dataset can be perfectly current and completely unprovenanced, and one number would hide exactly that.
Provenance
–Not yet assessed
Not the same as a poor grade. Provenance and documentation are graded from field-level metadata, which this record does not carry yet.
Documentation
–Not yet assessed
Not the same as a poor grade. Provenance and documentation are graded from field-level metadata, which this record does not carry yet.

DSuperseded
Superseded by https://catalog.opengrid.org/ds/gem-global-integrated-power-tracker. The record names its own successor, so this is a statement the catalog holds rather than an inference.
This record is at completeness level 1. Provenance and Documentation are assessed from field-level metadata, which a level 1 record does not carry. Not yet assessed is not the same as poor.
Visible without signing in, deliberately: an evaluator comparing catalogs should not have to register first.

- · Coverage overlaps from 2000-01-01 to 2021-06-01.
- · Bounding boxes overlap over 100% of their combined extent.
- · Both are point.
OpenGrid redirects you to the source and never proxies the bytes. For a partial read of a large dataset, use the SDK — it fetches an access plan and reads only the slice you asked for.
